Don Martell, Strait Area Safety Services – Owner/Operator
Don Martell is a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) the owner and operator of Strait Area Safety Services Ltd. He began his career in the trades, particularly the mechanical field, eventually achieving journeyman status as an automotive technician, a bus and transport technician, and a master emergency vehicle technician (EVT), where he developed a passion for public safety.
In addition to being a Canadian Registered Safety Professional, Don’s previous regulatory and public safety experience includes , ten years as an Occupational Health and Safety Officer with the Nova Scotia Department of Labour and Advanced Education, six years as the Nova Scotia Provincial Fleet and Facility Inspector for Emergency Health Services (EHS), and nine years as a Nova Scotia Provincial Motor Vehicle Inspection (MVI) Officer for all private and public vehicles operated on the highways of Nova Scotia.
Don also owned and operated the company Professional Automotive Mechanical Accident Investigations (PAMAI) completing mechanical investigations of vehicles involved in fatal accidents for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and appearing in prosecution cases as an expert witness on behalf of the crown prosecutors office. Today Don consults for employers in all industries to assist them in achieving compliance and regulatory responsibilities in relation to the Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Act and associated Regulations and Standards.
Marc-Andre Lavoie, Risk Marcker Incorporated – Leader and Founder
Marc-Andre Lavoie is a recognized leader and manager in the domain of environment, health and safety. His main focus is in occupational hygiene and has a wide range of local and international experience. He has been in the field of exposure science for more than 20 years.
Marc-Andre possess a Master’s degree in electrochemistry from “Université du Québec à Montréal”. He is a Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH) from the Canadian Registration Board of Occupational Hygienists (CRBOH). Marc-Andre has also been an adjunct professor for industrial toxicology, Industrial hygiene and workplace monitoring at University of Quebec in Hull and McGill University in Montreal.
Marc-Andre has occupied multiple roles as an industrial hygienist, from instrumentation expert for Levitt Safety (Eastern Canada), professional scientist at the “Institut de Recherche Robert Sauvé pour la Sante et Securite du travail” (IRSST) in Montreal. As an Industrial Hygienist at the Public Health department in Outaouais and different roles as an industrial Hygienist with Rio Tinto Alcan (Aluminium producer) in British Columbia, Europe Middle-east and Africa (EMEA) and at the headquarters in Montreal.
During the course of his career, Marc-Andre has worked in collaboration with occupational physicians, epidemiologist and toxicologist on multiple issues related to chemical exposure impact on the health of workers and the general public. With significant work in cases of lung and bladder cancer and incidence of asthma and COPD in the aluminium industry.
Marc-Andre is currently an active member of AIHA, with a leadership position in the Atlantic province section. A list of scientific contribution can be found in annex of this document.
I have supported student projects in the field of industrial hygiene and collaborated with multiple universities in Canada and in Europe. He is also a recognized trainer and speaker in the field of industrial hygiene.
Marc-Andre is now the leader and founder of Risk Marcker Incorporated, an industrial hygiene consulting firm based in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
