06 Mar Port Hawkesbury and Richmond County partnering to attract doctors to Strait Area
Cape Breton Island, NS – The Town of Port Hawkesbury and the Municipality of the County of Richmond are partnering on a collaborative approach to attract health care professionals to the region.
Through this process, Town and County officials are engaging with representatives from the Strait Richmond Hospital, Dr. Kingston Memorial Community Health Center, St. Anne Community and Nursing Care Center, Strait Area Chamber of Commerce, the Cape Breton Partnership, and other partners. The group has formed Cape Breton South Recruiting for Health as a regional approach focused on building on the strengths of local communities and providing a more collaborative environment to attract physicians and other healthcare professionals.
The group hosted a visit of six doctors to Port Hawkesbury on March 2nd and 3rd and they are working with the Nova Scotia Health Authority to arrange additional physician visits to all three participating medical facilities in the region. Feedback from the March visit included a comment from one physician with a young family that “this place has everything we need and want” which demonstrates the potential of rural Cape Breton to be a community of choice for health professionals.
“Our efforts have benefited greatly due to the collective expertise and experiences of this group’s dedicated partners, but we are limited by the reliable information we currently have access to,” says Dr. Trevor Boudreau, Town of Port Hawkesbury Councilor and Co-Chair of Cape Breton South Recruiting for Health. “Our real strength is going to come from our local residents and the feedback they can provide to help us build a stronger case for physician attraction in this region.”
If you don’t have a family doctor, you can help our efforts by registering today with Nova Scotia 811 by dialing 811 or visiting https://needafamilypractice.nshealth.ca/.
